Day 88 – At Sea

Despite being completely exhausted, I had an awful sleep. Because we docked for fuel, the ship was super rocky. Nick and I both tossed and turned the entire night, each of grumbling various expletives each time a drawer slammed open and closed.

Because I had such a poor sleep, I accidentally slept straight through Dianne’s class. I was so drowsy I just never got out of bed in the morning, and I just eventually dozed off, not waking up until around 1. Relieved to have gotten sleep but bummed to have missed Freeing the Human Voice, I went up to the sixth deck and got some lunch.

After lunch I had a weird poop. And by “weird,” I mean “liquidy.” I suspected traveler’s diarrhea, though I wasn’t sure how I could have gotten it. The only questionable food I’d eaten was on the streets of Community 1 two nights prior, and I figured I would have already gotten the Big D from that. But I really, really didn’t want to get the Big D, as we had only one port left and I was working with a perfect game. So I crossed my fingers and went on with my day.

I was able to write a bit in my journal before painting (Editor’s Note: some help that did! Nearly two months back in the States and I still haven’t gotten to Brazil. Goddamn I hate my work ethic, or lack thereof), where I continued work on my color series. I must admit, working on this color series has given me appreciation for the amount of work that goes into today’s stereotypical modern art (squares of color filling a canvass, for example). But, by the same token, it has also confirmed my suspicion that modern art does not take artistic talent. Because I sure as hell don’t have any, but I got numerous compliments on my color studies.

After painting I went to dinner, and shortly thereafter my fears were confirmed: I had traveler’s diarrhea. My perfect game, ruined in the bottom of the ninth. I still maintain that it was not my fault (traveler’s D from my reckless eating would have come on sooner), so I’m giving myself a perfect game with an asterisk.

After my potty break, Tolan and I continued to work on our rap. We made solid progress. Boy do I miss being creative with that kid.

At night we had Gamelan repair, where old Harnie had us repair the Gamelan instruments. The real draw, however, was the fact the fact that he was bribing us with pizza and cookies. So after restringing one of the instruments, I ate a ton of pizza and three cookies.

After the repair I came back to the room, but just as I settled in my bed to relax Jenna stopped by. Being the awesome friend and roommate that I am, I immediately excused myself. It was around 11:15 at this point, but since we were setting the clocks back an hour that night, I was happy to leave for a while. So I wandered around the ship, hanging out with various people for the next hour or so. I came back at 11:30 (new time, 12:30 old time), but they were still in there. Figuring that important things were going on, I just laid down in the hallway. Nick woke me up 45 minutes later, profusely apologetic. Turns out they had dozed off watching TV. I didn’t really mind; in addition to getting some shut-eye I knew that I could use this as leverage to kick him out of the room to have Amy over.
