Day 89 – At Sea

After my late evening the night before, I’m sorry to say that I slept through the Bobster’s class. I’m sure it was brilliant. Instead, I woke up around 10:30 and read the Autobiography of Malcolm X until my SeaTV production meeting. It’s a great book, that autobiography. Very interesting read and a very different look at the Civil Rights movement than the one taught in middle school.

In digital storytelling we all shared Ghana stories. I told the story about Abdul and his offer to shank my drug-dealing enemy. I definitely won the class competition for craziest Ghana experience.

After lunch I had drawing. My note says it was “kinda boring.” Can’t remember why.

During the short break between drawing and Gamelan, though, I made the mistake of laying down to rest. I just slept straight through Gamelan. Whoops, sorry Harnie. (Editor’s Note: That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! I totally didn’t skip class to watch a movie).

After dinner I practiced the rap with Tolan. After practicing I got into a great writing groove, and wrote two pages worth of solid jokes. That was very satisfying.

That night was the shipboard auction, so I checked it out while I continued to write. Some people on SAS, I’ll tell you, they just have an endless supply of money. The prices people paid for things was just absurd. A signed bottle of Pepto Bismol from Dr. Mort went for $30. Milk, cookies, and a bedtime story with Dr. Mort went for over $600. The voyage map sold for over $2000. It was just insane. It goes to a good cause, though, as the money provides scholarships for future SAS participants.

As interesting as it was to watch so much money be thrown around, I got bored after an hour or so and left.

Right after leaving, I ran into Michael and Marcus chillin’ in the piano lounge. They were also with Connor, who is hands-down one of the biggest goof-balls I’ve ever met. He has this huge head of shaggy hair, a scruffy beard, and he’s always got a big grin. Anyway, the three of us decided to head to Michael and Marcus’ cabin for a jam sesh. We’d all gotten some sweet Ghanaian drums, so we gathered ‘em up and pounded away for an hour. I’ll bet their neighbors were pissed. But we eventually had to stop, as the drumming begins to wear on your hands.

So I bid those dudes adieu and headed back to my cabin to get some sleep. But when I returned, Nick was visiting with Jenna. They both insisted I not leave, but I countered their insistence with a firm “No, I insist” and left. So I went up to the top deck to grab a midnight snack and kill some time.

To my delight, Nick came up no more than five minutes later reporting that Amy was looking for me. He said he’d give me the room for an hour. It was great; the leverage I’d earned last night paid off immediately.

So I tracked down Amy, and we watched an episode of Flight of the Conchords before hooking up for a little while. Nice way to end the day.
